What is ISTDP?
ISTDP (Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy) is an intensive form of depth therapy.
When good cooperation is created within the framework of ISTDP therapy this method has the potential to promote substantial changes in a short period of time.
Many people, who often have long-term treatment attempts behind them, experience a dramatic improvement from ISTDP.
ISTDP is a well documented scientific form of therapy that has proven itself effective for a variety of difficulties - including so called “treatment-resistant” states and “psychosomatic” conditions.
These are conditions where physical symptoms, including irritable bowel, headaches and other pains, fibromyalgia and other musculoskeletal syndromes are believed to be largely influenced by psychological conditions.
This method is also an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, and self-esteem and relationship issues - perhaps especially when these appear in combination.
What is at the core of ISTDP therapy?
ISTDP offers focused, intensive and profound processes that work with resolving the causes and symptoms of problems.
While Freud was not particularly concerned with this therapeutic technique, ISTDP has been developed by psychoanalytic psychologists who were looking for more effective ways of working.
Through innumerable hours of in-depth analysis of therapy videos, a system has been developed with algorithms for intervention, where the client’s responses to set parameters at any given time dictates the next intervention of the therapist.
Both the ISTDP therapist and the client are active participants and you will quickly be aided in becoming aware of everything that is happening, not the least of which lies beneath the radar of consciousness, in the here and now situation with the therapist and in the situations where your problems arise.
You and the therapist will work actively together to replace old, often unconscious ways of meeting the world with old perspectives and coping strategies, in order to step more authentically into a therapeutic relationship.
In essence, ISTDP is about restoring a natural, open and compassionate connection with ourselves and others.
What characterizes an ISTDP therapist?
The ISTDP therapist is active and invites you to step into relationships with yourself, the therapist and others in progressively healthier ways.
We work systematically and we can reach through the layers of learned protection, distancing, self-blame and self-hatred that may stand in the way.
ISTDP therapy can be an intense and demanding process, but it can also be deeply liberating.
We will find your thresholds so we can work at the very limit of what you can withstand. This is how therapy can be both safe and as effective as possible.
Our job as ISTDP therapists is to reveal yourself clearly to yourself. This constitutes also showing you the options and choices that are available to you and the consequences of these.
It is also our job to reach out to you, take responsibility for our half of the relationship and give you the necessary structure so you can really step into who you are.
Free will is at the core of our work with ISTDP . We strive to think aloud together and give clear evaluations of the moments when we think you are seeing things clearly.
But you are always free to choose what you want to focus on, and we take things at exactly the pace you prefer.
ISTDP fits for those who are willing to really put in the work that is necessary to be as free as one can in this world.
